How to Get Rid of Unwanted Items

The act of moving entails quite a bit of packing; and for some of us, the amount of items we have collected over the years is overwhelming. The thing is this buildup of items can cause unwanted stress during the move out process. This is due to the extra items you must pack, load, and haul; which may add up in moving costs. The last thing you would want is to pay more money in order to relocate; which is why getting rid of this clutter will benefit you in the long run. Below are some ways that you can use to clear the clutter.

The Decision

The first step in getting rid of your unwanted items is to decide which belongings you do not want anymore. If you happen to have items tucked away in boxes collecting dust, think about setting these aside in a “get rid of” pile. Go through your closet and evaluate your clothing. If you have clothes that have not been used in over a year, the chances are that you will never wear them again; so your best bet is to get rid of them. Go through your entire home and evaluate the worth of your belongings. This is the best way to start getting rid of the clutter.

Categorize Your Unwanted Items

Now that you have determined which belongings you no longer want and wish to part with, you can start categorizing them. Organization is always a helpful tool to utilize; this will help you keep your sanity intact. Below is a list of categories to consider while organizing your pile of belongings. These are all great ways to help rid yourself of unwanted items; you can even help others in the process.

  • Donate– This is one of the best, if not the best option in getting rid of unwanted items. In order to make a donation, all you need to do is drop off your items at any participating drop off location. You can choose your favorite donation center, or whichever is convenient. No matter where you drop off your unwanted goods, you can be certain that they will help someone in need. Some donation centers even offer pickups from your home. All you have to do is call them, set up a pickup date, and set your unwanted belongings outside where they will be picked up.
  • Garage/Yard Sale– Yard sales are a great way to make some extra cash. Set up a date, preferably a weekend when most people have the day off; and make sure to set a reasonable time. Many people head out to yard sales in the earlier mornings. If you want to have a successful yard sale it is important to post signs around your town. There are even websites where you can post the date, time, and location of your yard sale. This is a great way to get rid of unwanted items; and whatever is left behind can be donated.
  • Give Away– If you do not want to go through the trouble of setting up a yard sale, you can always give away your items for free. You can list them on classified add type website; or you can set things outside in a box marked “Free.” A fun way to give away belongings is to make a party out of it. Invite friends, family, and neighbors over to go through your give away pile. They can take what they want, socialize, and you can clear out the clutters. If there are items left over you can donate these as well.

Do Not Throw Away

Please resist the urge to throw away any unwanted items. Unless they are severely broken, or cannot be utilized by anyone, highly consider the option to donate instead. So goes the saying, “one man’s trash is another man’s treasure.” Throwing away your unwanted items will only cause more clutter in our landfills, which is not good for the environment. And why toss something when it could potentially help a family or person in need. Consider other options as opposed to tossing out unwanted belongings. Reduce your clutter, and reuse your belongings by giving them away to someone who will gladly utilize them. Getting rid of unwanted items can be simple and beneficial.
