The Do’s and Don’ts of Moving

No one likes to be told what to and what not to do; but the fact is that moving can be a bit of a challenge. This can be especially true if you have never moved before. Although some may disapprove of being told what to do, many still enjoy the idea of having a guide. Through difficult times it’s only natural to wish for some much needed guidance; which is precisely the reason for this article. This guide will help you have a stress free relocation by providing you with a few simple do’s and don’ts of moving. Make things easier on yourself by enlisting the help of a few suggestions, you will thank yourself later.

DO:

  • Get a head start. Begin planning your move early, last minute moves can cause a lot of unwanted stress. Moving takes time, so you should ideally start planning a couple of months before your move. Schedule your move with a company at least 3 to 4 weeks before your planned move out date.
  • Get rid of unwanted items to make space.
  • Dedicate time to research companies, services, and prices. This will help you find a professional and reliable moving company. Come up with at least 2 companies so you can compare and save.
  • Look at your finances to create a budget plan; and stick to it. Moving is expensive, try not to spend money on services you can’t afford. Always have an emergency fund in case you exceed your budget.
  •  Purchase insurance to make sure your items are covered if damaged. Moving companies offer insurance to their customers; ask your mover for more details.
  • Obtain enough durable packing materials. You should have plenty of sturdy boxes, packaging tape, bubble wrap, packing blankets, packing wrap, and any other materials that will keep your belongings safe.
  • Label and sub label all of your boxes. Title boxes with the according rooms they come from along with a complete or concise inventory list of the contents. This will make unpacking easier.
  • Wrap, label, and insulate all fragile items.
  • Plan to be present on move out day to guide and answer questions. This way you can be easily reached if needed.
  • Get a sitter for children and or pets on move out day. This will make it easier to load without distractions.
  • Cone off a designated area for the moving truck at least 3 car lengths.
  • If in an apartment inform landlord and neighbors, as well as reserving the elevator.
  • Set aside a wall in each room of your new home to stack boxes against. This will prevent clutter and make it easier to maneuver.

DON’T:

  • Go with the first moving company you come across, or select solely based on price. You should spend time researching several companies to obtain a reliable mover.
  • Don’t bring everything you have ever owned to your new home. Get rid of things to make moving easier and less expensive.
  • Don’t be vague when informing your moving representative of how many belongings you have. Be as detailed as possible to get a more accurate estimate.
  • Don’t refuse an in home estimate. This is the best way to get accurate pricing on your move.
  • Don’t pack jewelry, important documents, money, or anything of high value. Take these items with you to prevent them from being lost or stolen.
  • Don’t over pack your boxes. This will make moving more difficult. Leave a space of at least 2 inches from the contents to the top of the box.
  • Don’t forget to notify people, places, and services of your address change.
  • Don’t move everything on your own. Enlist the help of friends and family to make the move easier.
  • Don’t wait until the last minute to start packing and planning.
  • Don’t pack items that are not allowed to be shipped. Check with your moving company for specific details.
  • Don’t be afraid to ask your moving company questions. You are paying for their services and they should be able to assist you throughout your move. If you have and questions or concerns ask them.
